[3/4] Traveling to Ogasawara (小笠原諸島)

Part three of our journey from Tokyo to Ogasawara, June 2013.

Ogasawara Islands, also known as the Bonin Islands, became a UNESCO world heritage site in June 2011.  However it remains a difficult place to access as there are no airports and the journey by ferry takes 25.5 hours from Tokyo, in one direction. Should you plan to visit it will require six full days for the shortest round-trip.  If you have more time, I definitely recommend spending more time there as the shortest trip gives you only 72 hours on the islands, which is definitely not enough.

We stayed at Hotel Horizons, one of the many accommodations available on the main island, Chichijima.  During peak seasons, you will need to book as early as possible (max two months) to ensure you get the accommodation of choice.  While the islands also offer a number of activities (diving, dolphin/whale watching, hiking, etc), those should all be reserved in advanced as well. Of course, if you are just there to relax and hang out around the island that would work just as well.

Check out the pictures of Ogasawara below and additional pictures in the subsequent sections.
